Sustainability Program Design, Development, Support, Reporting, and Auditing

The Firm has supported clients in their endeavors to incorporate tenets of environmental sustainability and social responsibility into their businesses.  Our approach is to institute strategic environmental management - linked with corporate objectives and functional activities.  External pressures such as increasing market competitiveness, more comprehensive regulations, investor activism and changing consumer behavior are prompting more corporations to integrate sustainability into core business strategies, designs and operations. They are accomplishing this through the development of corporate sustainability plans that are aligned with corporate objectives, business strategies and operating models.  However, many fall short of developing a holistic approach spanning sales and marketing, plant day-to-day management, building design and operation, employee concerns, community involvement, through to product packaging, waste disposal and recycling,  Most simply focus on one or two aspects of their business and fail to take advantage of the potential gains available through a comprehensive sustainability – strategic environmental management approach.  Developing a unique sustainability plan will provide a practical roadmap that will link sustainability to bottom-line values. The key tenet of success is developing a plan with the client that is specific to the industry, the products manufactured and the impact the client has on the community and environment in which it operates. The innovation and strategies associated with the client’s sustainability plan will be a direct result of actual market needs, internal/external collaboration and corporate business strategy.

With PhD-level, significantly experienced sustainability professionals, and strong legal and technical EHS/CSR support, the Firm is uniquely staffed to provide the coordination necessary to accomplish a strategic environmental management program for any company.  Our experience in developing sustainability issues maps, vision statements, key performance indicators, metrics, and reports, along with our hands-on approach to EHS management makes us a truly valuable Sustainability partner, whether as a team member or as the Firm chosen to develop the program in a turn-key fashion, or through audits of existing programs.

In a recent article “Transformation of a University Climate Action Plan into a Sustainability Plan,” Dr. Clinton discusses her dissertation research project where she created two new software tools:
•      a framework for defining customized comprehensive sustainability objectives across the full spectrum of environmental, economic and social impacts of an organization; and
•      a prioritization tool for selecting actions that will have optimal results.

Application of these tools to one subset of university climate action plan mitigations showed, for a slightly lower capital outlay compared to the baseline action set:
•      net present value ($) increased by nearly 400 times,
•      simple payback reduced from 9 years to 2 years for the full set of actions,
•      more than 5 times the green house gas reduction (in Metric tonnes of CO2-equivalents), and
•      more than 5 times the water savings.

While the project involved application to a university setting, the robust tools can be used for any organization
